Chip Repair vs Full Windscreen Replacement: How to Know Which You Need

← Back to Blog

A rock hits your windscreen on the motorway and suddenly you've got a chip or crack staring back at you. The good news: not all damage requires a full and expensive windscreen replacement. In many cases, a chip can be repaired in 30 minutes for a fraction of the cost. Here's how to tell which situation you're in.

What Is a Windscreen Chip Repair?

Chip repair (also called resin injection) is a process where a technician injects a clear, UV-curing resin into the damaged area of your windscreen. The resin fills the chip, bonds to the surrounding glass, and prevents it from spreading. Once cured, the repaired area is almost invisible.

It's quick, affordable, and in most cases your insurance will cover it with zero excess. Most reputable insurers consider chip repair a "free service" because repairing a chip is far cheaper for them than replacing a whole windscreen.

When Can a Chip Be Repaired?

A chip is generally repairable if all of the following apply:

  • The damage is a chip, bullseye, star break, or combination break — not a long crack
  • The damage is smaller than a $2 coin in diameter (roughly 25mm)
  • The chip is not in the driver's direct line of sight (the area swept by the wipers directly in front of the driver)
  • The chip is not at the edge of the windscreen (edge damage weakens the glass boundary and spreads rapidly)
  • The damage does not penetrate both layers of the laminated glass
  • The chip is not contaminated with dirt or moisture (though we can often clean and treat these)

When Is Full Replacement Necessary?

You will need a full windscreen replacement if:

  • The crack is longer than 15 centimetres
  • The damage is directly in the driver's line of sight (even a repaired chip can cause minor distortion)
  • The chip is at the edge of the windscreen (edge cracks spread quickly and compromise structure)
  • There are multiple chips or cracks across the windscreen
  • The damage has penetrated the inner layer of the laminated glass (you can feel the chip on the inside surface)
  • The windscreen has a long crack, even if it started as a chip, once it's longer than about 15cm, repair is no longer safe

Windscreen Crack Repair Cost: What to Expect

The cost of fixing a windscreen crack depends entirely on its size and location:

  • Chip repair (up to 25mm): from $120 — about 30 minutes, often covered by insurance with zero excess
  • Full windscreen replacement (crack over 15cm or in line of sight): from $300 up to $1,500+ depending on the vehicle

The takeaway: act quickly. A repairable chip that spreads into a long crack becomes a replacement job. Don't leave it — call us and we'll assess the damage on the spot.

The Importance of Acting Quickly

Here is the most important piece of advice in this entire article: don't wait.

A small chip that is repairable today can become an unrepairable crack within days — or even hours. Temperature changes (hot days followed by cold nights), the vibration of driving, and even a heavy door slam can cause a chip to "run" into a crack. Once it cracks beyond 15cm, your only option is a full replacement.

Call us as soon as you notice damage!

The "2-Hour Rule" for Temperature

Windscreens are under constant stress from temperature changes. In Sydney, summer temperatures inside a parked car can exceed 40°C, while overnight temperatures in winter can drop to single digits. This rapid expansion and contraction places enormous stress on any existing chip, causing it to spread.

If you notice a chip, try to keep the car in a garage or shade, avoid using your heater or air conditioner on maximum blast directed at the windscreen, and call us as soon as possible.

Does Insurance Cover Chip Repair?

If you have comprehensive car insurance, chip repair is almost always covered — and in most cases with zero excess. This is because repairing a chip costs the insurer far less than paying for a full replacement down the track.

We work with all major Australian insurers. If you're not sure whether your policy covers chip repair, call us and we can check for you.
